Description Of Item: Quarto sized single sheet certificate of registration to practice as an optician under the Opticians Regitration Act of Victoria 1935 No 427 for Barry Leighton Cole dated 12 December 1955, framed.
Historical Significance: The Opticians Registration Act of Victoria was passed in 1935 requiring for the first time in Victoria that persons be registered as opticians by the Opticians Registration Board in order to engage in the practice of optometry. There were 487 applications for registration in 1936 (see Cat No 888) and by May 1937 333 had been registered (see cat No 889). This certificate is number 427 so fewer than 100 optometrists were registered in the next 20 years, an average of only 5 a year. This certificiate is for Barry Cole who became the foundation professor of optometry in the University of Melbourne in 1978.
