Description Of Item: Framed diploma of Licentiate of Optometric Science (LOSc) of the Australian College of Optometry for Barry Leighton Cole dated 20th March 1956 and signed by Arthur Amies, President of the College and JB Arnott, Secretary.
Historical Significance: The Australian College of Optometry was established in 1940 to provide a four-year university level optometry course on completion of which the diploma of Licentiate of Optometric Science (LOSc) was awarded. The first diploma was awarded in 1944 to John Nathan (see Cat No 20).This certificate was awarded to Barry Cole who became the foundation professor of optometry in the University of Melbourne in 1978 and was the Director of the College from 1964 until his retirement from that post in 1998.
