Staff of the Victorian College of Optometry, Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences and the National Vision Research Institute 1997

Historical Significance: This photograph was taken in December 1997 prior to the staff Christmas party. It was taken from the main stair looking down on the E-W corridor of the Clinic. Professor Cole (Centre right, 4 rows back) was Head of the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences and the Director of the College at the time. He retired in March 1999. Standing on his right is Professor Nevile McBrien, who had been appointed to the second chair of the Department and was to succeed Professor Cole as Head and Director in 1999. In front of them is Ms Gillian Holley, the Secretary and Executive Officer of the College and to her left is Ms Heather Johnston, Assistant Secretary and who was later to be the Secretary. Behind Professor Cole is Dr Michael Kalloniatis (in red shirt) who left in 2002 to take the chair of optometry at the University of Auckland. The Director the National Vision Research Institute, Professor Robert Augusteyn, is 9 rows back and behind him on his left is Mitchell Anjou, Director of the Clinic. In front of Mitchell Anjou to his left is Emeritus Professor Barry Collin, who was reader in the Department but became Professor of Optometry at the University of NSW until retiring in 1995 to returm to Melbourne as a Professorial Fellow. Other recognisable faces are: Lorraine Lipson (LIbrarian), Diane Leaf (VES), Margot Matthews (Continuing Education), Denise Anderson (VES), Jenny Maddocks (Research Assistant to Professor Cole), Barbara Carrick (Post and Stationery), Adam Robertson (Laboratory Manager), Tony Shevlelf (Technician), Associate Professor Alan Johnston, Guido Tomasich (Technical Officer), Dr Carol Lakkis (Research Fellow), and clinic staff Richard Lindsay, Timothy Fricke, Anthea Cochrane and Rod Baker.
