Description Of Item: Digital colour image of Professor Leo G Carney and Professor Barry L Cole on the occasion of the award of an honorary Doctorate of the University to Professor Cole by the Queensland University of Technology in April 1999
Historical Significance: Professor Cole was the foundation Professor of Optometry in the University of Melbourne 1978 to 1999 and was the first full time Director of the Victorian College of Optometry 1964 - 1998. He held these posts at a time of great change in the profession of optometry, particularly in the education of optometrists and the emergence of a significant research capability, in which Professor Cole played an important role. These contributions were recognised by the Queensland University of Technology in 1999, the year in which Professor Cole retired. Optometry at QUT had benefited from his advice and from engaging several of his former students to lead an important transformation of the school of optometry at that institution. Profesor Carney was one of his former students and was Professor of Optometry and Head of the Department of Optometry at QUT at the time this photograph was taken. His other stundets who were recruited by QUT included Professor Ken Bowman AM, Profesor Brian Brown, Professor David Atchison and Associate Professor Jan Lovie-Kitchin.
