Description Of Item: 'Gold' metal semi-aviator style spectacle frame glazed with photochromic glass D seg bifocal lenses, double bar bridge, spring sides, 135 x 60 mm, right side marked Carrera (on outside), left side marked Made in Austria 5740 40 58.15 140 (and Carrera on outside) . Contained in brown faux reptile cloth covered metal snap case. OPSM logo stamped in gold inside lid. Spectacles only in Museum Gallery.
Historical Significance: Safilo Group S.p.A. is one of the largest eyewear companies in the world. It designs, produces and distributes prescription frames, sunglasses, sports eyewear, ski goggles, ski and cycling helmets under its own five 'House' brands and about thirty licensed brands. Their products are primarily manufactured in three Italian facilities with an additional plant in Slovenia, one in USA and one in China and are marketed in 130 countries worldwide. Safilo Group S.p.A. was founded in 1934 by Guglielmo Tabacchi when he purchased Italy's first industrial complex for producing lenses and frames in Pieve di Cadore. Safilo acquired Austria's Carrera Optyl in the 1990s.
