After several years as Manager of the Optometry Clinic at City University, as a clinical instructor at Manchester University and in private practice, she undertook research for a PhD degree in the Department of Ophthalmology at Manchester University, completing the degree in 1997. She then took an academic post in optometry at Aston University in Birmingham ultimately being appointed professor of optometry. While at Aston she developed a $20 million research eye hospital, raising the funds for its establishment and running it as its Managing Director. She moved to Australia in 2006, taking an appointment as Professor and VESKI Fellow in the Centre for Eye Research Australia. The Centre for Eye Research Australia is the research arm of ophthalmology at the University of Melbourne.
