Description Of Item: Cartoon of final year students 1944 [John Nathan, Tony Douglas, Douglas Allen and Vans Ovenden]. Ink on paper framed with slip with the words 'Final Year Optometrical Science 1944 ' hand printed on the upper edge and the names of the students on the lower edge. The names are John Nathan, Tony 'Craniclaw' Douglas, Vans Ovenden and Doug Allen. Signed 'John Nathan'. Black frame 410 mm x 335 mm. Image 350 x 270 mm.
Historical Significance: The cartoon was drawn by John Nathan, one of the final year students in the first class to graduate with the diploma of Licentiate of Optometric Science from the Australian (later Victorian) College of Optometry. His father was Bertram Nathan who played an important role in obtaining registration of optometrists in 1935 and was the first Chairman of the Opticians Registration Board when it was first formed in 1936. John Nathan was to become Director of Studies from 1950 to 1964 and President of the College from 1969 to 1978.
