Historical Significance: Registration and regulation of optometrtists under the authority of State Acts of Parliament was introduced in Australia and New Zealand in the first half of the 20th C. The first Act was in Tasmania in 1913 (see profile of Newham Waterworth, this web site under the tab 'People who made History' for the nice story of political intrigue associated with the enactment of this legislation). This was followed by Queensland 1917, South Australia 1920, New South Wales 1930, Victoria 1935 and Western Australia in 1940. A Registration Act was enacted in New Zealand in 1928. TheAustralian State Acts were rescinded in 2010 when national registration of health professions was introduced by the Commonwealth Government. The Council of Australian Governments (COAG) at its meeting of 26 March 2008 signed an Intergovernmental Agreement on the health workforce and enusing leglisation The Health Practitioner Regulation (Administrative Arrangements) National Law Act 2008 and the Health Practitioner Regulation National Law Act 2009 followed. This legislation created a single national registration and accreditation system for ten health professions: chiropractors; dentists (including dental hygienists, dental prosthetists and dental therapists); medical practitioners; nurses and midwives; optometrists; osteopaths; pharmacists; physiotherapists; podiatrists; and psychologists.
