The words 'the Institute of Ophthalmic Opticians' are inscribed on a gold annulus around the armorial bearings. The motto 'Lux in tenebris' (Light out of the darkness) is set obliquely across the cenre of the arms Historical Significance: A number of Australian optometrists obtained formal qualification as Fellows of the Institute of Ophthalmic Opticians in London in the early years of the 20th C. This item would have been displayed in the practice of an early Australian optometrist holding the Fellowship of the Institute.
