He was Dean of Dentistry in the University of Melbourne and assisted the College establish its optometry course in the 1940s and the transfer of that course in 1961 to the University of Melbourne. A colour photograph of this painting is in Photographs Album 1. The artist Alan Moore studied at the National Gallery of Victoria School, winning the Grace Joel Prize in 1942. He also studied in Sydney with J.S. Watkins. He enlisted in the RAAF in 1942, and in 1943 was appointed an official war artist working in New Guinea, the Middle East and Europe.
