Description Of Item: Bronze head of Professor Barry Cole on marble pedestal. It is one of two castings. The other is held at the offices of the Optometrists Association Australia in Drummond Street Carlton.
Historical Significance: The bust was commissioned by the Australian Optometrical Association in honour of Professor Barry Cole. Professor Cole was the foundation Professor of Optometry in the University of Melbourne 1978 to 1999 and was the first full time Director of the College 1964 - 1998. It was presented to Professor Cole at a dinner in Sydney organised by the OAA at which Dr Geoffrey Henry was asked to give the eulogy. It is on loan to the College of Optometry. Charles Wright AM (1912-2003) was a multi-talented South Australian optometrist (see his obituary Clin Exp Optom 2003; 86: 413.) He was assisted in this sculpture by renowed South Australian sculptor John Dowie (1915-2008). 397 kb image in Museum iPhoto
