Historical Significance: Dr Sharon Bentley (fomerly Haymes) was appointed Senior Lecturer in optometry at Deakin University in 2011. She qualified in optometry at the University of Melbourne in 1988, where she also completed her Masters and PhD degrees. She also completed a Master of Public Health from Johns Hopkins University. She has pursued a research career in the Department of Optometry and Vision Sciences at the University of Melbourne, the Australian College of Optometry, Dalhousie University in Halifax, Canada, and currently at the Centre for Eye Research Australia. She is also a widely experienced optometrist with expertise in low vision. Her research interests are low vision and quality of life outcomes, which have broadened over the years to wider fields of population health and epidemiology.
