Description Of Item: Swatch of samples of iris colours, 100 mm L x 30 mm W, pivoted on a white plastic screw. Marked on front 'leaf' 'Titmus Eurocon' and on the seond leaf 'Titmus Kontaktlinsen KG 875 ASCHAFFENBURG'. Each leaf has a printed iris, all of different colours and each carrying an identification number and the same logo as on the first leaf.
Historical Significance: Titmus Eurocon was founded in 1964 and produced the first soft contact lens in 1972. In 1974 it introduced the first cosmetic soft contact lens with a printed or hand painted iris. This swatch would have been the prescriber's aid to selecting an iris colour that matched the other eye of the patient. Titmus Eurocon was acquired by Ciba Vision in 1983, Ciba Vision being an off-shoot of Ciba-Geigy USA Pharmaceutical Division that was established in 1980.
