Description Of Item: (1) Carbon copy of a letter to the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers from the President of the Australian College of Optometry, Professor Arthur Amies, dated March 19 1953 (and several attached drafts) advising that Certificate No 1 of Fellowship of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers awarded to Ballarat optometrist, Carl Werner, dated December 31 1898, had been given to the Australian College of Optometry by the Werner family and that the Council of the College had decided to return it to the Company for preservation and that Mr Francis Slade, Secretary of the Victorian Optical Association would do so personably when visiting London shortly (2) Carbon copy of a letter from the Master of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers, Walter L Chance, dated July 9 1953, signed personally by the Master addressed to F C H Werner acknowledging receipt of the certificate delivered by Mr Slade on June 22 1953 (3) Covering letter dated July 10 1953 from Roland Champness, Clerk of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers to Professor Amies and his acknowledgment dated July 17 1953
Historical Significance: Carl Werner (b1852), an early Australian optometrist with a practice in Ballarat, travelled to London to study for the then new Fellowship of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers (FSMC) which he attained in 1898. He was awarded the first Fellowship certificate. His three sons, Fred, Roy and Max, were also optometrists and they too qualified in London and ran the well known Melbourne optometry practice, C Werner and Sons.
