Description Of Item: Original blue cloth, xxxvii preliminaries + 2 unnumbered pages, one being a frontispiece photograph of J van der Hoeve, Pages numbered 4631 - 5711 that include the index, 1181 illustrations including 32 in colour. Pencil price 7 pounds, 17 shillings and 6 pence and sticker of bookseller Angus and Robertson inside front cover.
Historical Significance: Sir Stewart Duke-Elder MA DSc PhD MD ChB FRCS (1899-1978), a Scot, was a prolific writer and editor, producing seven volumes of Textbook of Ophthalmology and fifteen volumes of its successor, System of Ophthalmology, along with many other textbooks and scientific papers. He served for many years as editor of Brit J Ophthal and Ophthal Lit and was involved in the formation of the Institute of Ophthalmology in London. He was elected FRS and he was knighted in 1933. He was Surgeon-Oculist to King Edward VIII, George V and Queen Elizabeth II. This book is an excellent source of historical notes.
