Catalogue Number: 4113 Silver Alloy Lorgnette and Case Category: Spectacles and lenses Sub-Category: Lorgnette Year Of Publication/Manufacture: c 1930 Time Period: 1900 to 1939 Description Of Item: Silver alloy short handle folding lorgnette, 46 x 115 mm (closed), round eye wire, glazed with +2.00 D and +2.50 D flat lenses. C shape bridge, decorated, spring loaded and hinged at one end for folding. Handle with release knob has rectangular pattern with alternating smooth and cross-hatched rectangles, a scalloped surface, sides with raised mid-portion and an angular loop at the end threaded with a black cord 550 mm long. A safety pin like device which appears to have an integrated pocket clip is also threaded on to the cord. The lorgnette is contained in a light tan lined vinyl slip in case 150 mm long and tapered from 68 to 28 mm, stamped in gold 'ALFRED NOTT PTY. LTD. Cnr. COLLINS & RUSSELL STS., MELB,- MF 5911'. Historical Significance: This lorgnette was owned by either of twins Doris Ethel (1879 - 1959) and Lucy Maude (1879 - 1968) Maplestone. Images of both as young women wearing spectacles were supplied by the donor. At least one of the twins was myopic.
