Decorative engraving on silver bridge, pink flowers, buds and green leaf decals on brow pieces and temples. Plastic nose pads, unglazed. 'Martin-Copeland 4 1/4 - 5 1/2 Alum.' marked on each temple, '22' and '1/2 -12 CT GF' engraved on back of bridge.Overal size 125 x 40 mm. Frame size 44 x 22.Case made of stippled grey coloured metal with larger pink flower decals matching those on frame. Case size is 147 x 50 mm. Historical Significance: Martin-Copeland is one of the great heritage names of the American optical industry, starting as jewellers in 1880 in Providence, Rhode Island, then a centre for excellence in gold metal-working. By 1919 this company was known for its top-quality sold gold vest pocket lapel chains and watch fobs. As many jewellers did at the time, they later made a small collection of optical frames. By its Diamond Anniversary in 1955, Martin-Copeland was the pre-eminent maker of gold-filled frames in the USA. How Acquired: Donated by Peter Dwyer Date Acquired: 20/10/2021 Condition: Excellent.
