Historical Significance: The ointment was placed on top of the pedestal and covered with a wax paper seal to preserve the ointment. These were distributed by the producers in a cardboard box. This product originated in 1596 as Dr Johnson's Golden Eye Ointment. The recipe was passed by successive inheritances through the Hind and then Singleton families. It has since passed to the Folgham and then Green families. The pedestal pots were first made specifically for Singleton's Eye Ointment in about 1804. Labelling on the pots omitted the word 'Golden' from 'Singleton's Golden Eye Ointment' after about 1899.Ref: www.ointmentpots/victorian/singletons
