Description Of Item: Near reading test cards. Stiff dark green marbelled cloth covers inside of which are near test type cards held in place by corner pockets. On the inside front cover is a test card with a series of 9 paragraphs with print ranging from a small size (marked D-0.50 Dis 1 ft) to larger size (marked D-2.50 Dis 9 ft) and on the inside back cover a similar series but in reverse order. There are 2 clean spare cards under each card. The heading on each card reads 'TEST TYPES AFTER SNELLEN) and at the bottom is an attribution 'Extract from Valk's 'Errors of Refraction'.
Historical Significance: This item was donated by the dentist son of a Melbourne GP who used it in his practice. This dates the item between 1940 and 1950. The attribution to Valk's 'Errors of Refraction' is most likely to Francis Valk. 'Lectures on the errors of refraction and their correction with glasses' first published 1889 with several editions, the last being in 1904.
