Description Of Item: Two tinted glass lenses in paper envelopes. Smaller envelope, 75mm square, printed 'Umbral 65/ Zeiss/ West Germany/ Symbol fur Zeiss Qualitat/ sph 0.00, 70, d 1.8' contains a 70mm diameter plano glass lens with 65% brown tint. Larger envelope, 81mm square, is printed 'Umbral 85/ Zeiss/ Markenqualitat von Carl Zeiss/ 65/ sphere 0.00/ Dicke 1.8' and a barcode. It contains a plano glass lens with 85% brown tint which actually measures 70mm diameter.
Historical Significance: In 1924 Zeiss introduced the Umbral sun protection lens, the first uniformly tinted sunglass with or without spectacle correction. The Umbral 65 envelope marked 'West Germany' predates the reunification of Germany in 1990.
