Description Of Item: Small brass spectacles with rectangular lenses and narrow loop-ended temples. Left temple stamped '12' for 12 inch focal length. Open top slip-in spectacle case of papier mache stamped in gilt lettering 'C.W.WINGATE/ JEWELER & OPTICIAN/ 173 WASH'N ST/ BOSTON. Wingate was at this address 1883-1895. Specs 140mm W x 25mm H x 22mm D. Case156mm L x 33mm W x 18mm D.
Historical Significance: Charles William Wingate (1834-1913) watchmaker, jeweler & optician, succeeded to the Waterville business of his father, Charles J Wingate, c1856.
