Practical Orthoptics in the Treatment of Squint

Historical Significance: This is a first edition of one of the classic text books in orthoptics but there were important orthoptic books that preceded it. The 'greats' in orthoptics were Claude Worth (1869-1936) who wrote 'Squint, its causes, pathology and treatment' (First edition 1903 and 6 later editions) . Worth founded the orthoptic clinic at Moorfields Eye Hospital and invented the amblyoscope (synoptophore). Francis Bernard Chavasse (1888-1941) wrote the 7th edition (1939) of Worth's book, which became 'Worth and Chavasse's Squint: the binocular reflexes and the treatment of strabismus' in later editions. This book by Lyle also went to many ediitons: Keith Lyle was the author of the first 8 editions (8th edition in 1950) and of a 9th, with GJO Bridgman, published in 1959. T Keith Lyle CBE MA MD MChir FRCP FRCS (1905-1987) was an international figure in ocular motility who in addition to writing this book edited Chavasse's edition of Worth's squint and the 13th Ed of May and Worth's diseases of the eye. He was President of the Faculty of Ophthalmology in 1968 and Dean of the Institute of Ophthalmology for a time.
