Historical Significance: Dame Edna Everage was the most famous alter ego of Melbourne comedian Barry Humphries (1934 -) who had a highly successful stage career from his years as a student at the University of Melbourne in the 1950s that blossomed into a very long international career when he moved to London in 1959. Dame Edna Everage dressed extravagantly and her outrageous spectacles were a signature feature. Originally the glasses were made by Stephanie Deste but were later designed by Stephen Admitt. This pair of glasses is a replica sold as a souvenir of Barry Humphries shows. See the book Cult Eyewear by Neil Handley for more information about Barry Humphries' glasses.
