Description Of Item: Light brown varnished wooden cabinet 505 mm x 705 mm x 230 mm with six individually illuminated panels in the hinged front. Each panel is controlled from a bank of six switches on the side of the unit. A separate master switch is mounted above the bank of six. Top panel, 410 mm x 195 mm is an astigmatism fan with axes hand written at the end of each line. The two middle panels, 190 mm x 190 mm, are axis locators each with hand written axes. The bottom panels, 190 mm x 260 mm, contain letter charts and two separate smaller panels each 97 mm x 70 mm contain a polarised pair aligned at right angles and a duochrome chart. The panel of larger letters is held in slides in front of the cabinet door and could be removed to insert an alternative panel. All panels, though translucent have a tissue paper backing.
Historical Significance: A home made example of the kind of test charts used by optometrists in the second half of the 20th century.
