Description Of Item: Large, square-shaped, brown transparent optyl acetate frame, matt silver metal strip across bridge, embedded centre joints. Right temple marked 'optyl Saphira' , left marked 'FRAME GERMANY'. Sticker with '87 hand-written on left temple.Frame size 52/20, overall size 140 X 50 mm.
Historical Significance: In the 1970s, epoxy resins began to be used under the name of 'Optyl' for 'plastic' spectacle frames. The material was claimed to be hypoallergenic and also less likely to distort CR39 lenses, which were replacing glass for spectacle lenses at the time. See also Cat. # 2083.
