The impress on the seal has the words INSTITUTE OF OPTOMETRISTS around the perimeter and OF NEW SOUTH WALES FOUNDED 1904 at the centre. Viewed from the underside, an unpainted raised section of lead suggests that the seal may have been replaced at some time. Historical Significance: According to Barry Cole in his 'History of Australian Optometry' p40 and p47. The Australasian Optical Association was founded in 1904. It changed its name to Institute of Ophthalmic Opticians of NSW in 1909 when other states set up their own associations. This seal press may be from 1904. The actual seal dates from 1922 when the Association changed its name to Institute of Optometrists.
