The pair became separated in 1940 and Professor Ballantyne continued preparation, with most being carried out after his retirement until his death in 1953. Isaac Michaelson, then professor of ophthalmology, Hadassah-Hebrew University Medical School, Jerusalem,6 was asked to complete the task which needed extensive revision and the first edition was published in 1962. This second edition includes the advances in knowledge and techniques developed in the decade following the publication of the first edition.
