Description Of Item: Hand-held direct ophthalmoscope, black head and handle. Chain of lenses and disc wheel of auxiliary lenses. Head marked 'AIM' in rectangle, and '0828 / PAT APP FOR'. Sliding thumb control for power on top collar of handle, near imprint 'OFF'. Size, 260x45x45mm.
Historical Significance: Patent 0828: 'Off-axis or unobscured systems in which all of the mirrors share a common axis of rotational symmetry'. AIM was founded in 1937 by Clement Clarke in Pratt Street, Cambden Town, as a joint venture with C. W. Dixey & Son Ltd, Alfred Hawes & Son Ltd, and Curry & Paxton Ltd.
