Description Of Item: One clear rounded off square toric glass lens in yellow packet and pair of Crookes round toric glass meniscus lenses in green packets. Both packets have 'Toric Lenses' printed in black around the Imperial Optical Co. Toronto logo at top of packet and 'Ophthalmic Lenses, Made in Canada' at bottom.'Sphero Cylinder, 47 mm square, +6.00 BC, Index 1.523 PREMEX on yellow packet, ''Genuine Crookes, mm thickness,PERFLEX on green packet. Both have powers stamped on.
Historical Significance: Founded in 1900 by Percy Hermant, Imperial Optical was the first prescription lens business in Eastern /Canada. Under his leadership the company eventually grew to be the largest company of its kind in the British Commonwealth. After his death in 1959, the company passed onto his son Sydney who sold majority control to the Caribbean based Harcourt Carter Optical in 1965. By 1991, Harcourt Carter Optical had assumed total control of Imperial Optical.See Cat. # 2132 for information about the development of Crookes lenses.
