Description Of Item: Each volume is hardcover 225 x 155 mm. Vol I has 459 pages and Vol II has 405 pages each including an index. It covers the anatomy of the eye, optics, optics of the eye, lenses, use and value of glasses, testing equipment needed, examination methods, presbyopia and the refractive errors. The last pages in each volume have advertisments for other books published by The Keystone including an advertisement for a translation of Tscherning's book on Physiologic Optics and Charles Prentice's book on ophthalmic lenses. Volume I originally owned by A M Whittenbury of S.A. (25/4/1917), Volume II from The Wright Library, Optometry Australia. See also Cat. No. 62 and Rare Books copy (No. 141)
Historical Significance: CH Brown is medically qualified and is described on the title page as Professor of Optics and Refraction at an unstated university but possibly the University of Pennsylvania since he is described as a graduate of that University, a former physician at the Philadelpia Hospital and a member of the medical society in that State. The Book was originally published as a serial publication in "The Keystone" starting in May 1890. The first edition in one volume was published in 1897. "The Keystone" is styled on the title page as the organ of the Jewelry and Optical Trades. See also Cat No. 62 and 141.
