Historical Significance: Leslie Taylor was the son of a jeweller and was encouraged to train as an optometrist to work in his father's business as jeweller-optometrists were a common business arrangement at that time. He was registered in N.S.W. in 1937 and travelled to England graduating as F.B.O.A. in 1938. During WW 2 he was commissioned as Lieutenant and posted to Lae in New Guinea as the only optometrist. He developed skills using acrylics to manufacture temporary prosthetic eyes while in New Guinea and enhanced his expertise in peacetime to become the first optometrist to make and fit prosthetic eyes in his practice in Sydney.
