Description Of Item: Seven flat glass lenses, some roughly shanked, 41 to 43 mm diam. in simple buff coloured slide-in packets, three printed 'SPH./CYL' and 'A.O.CO.' with powers stamped on and 883 printed in R lower corner. Four with a decorative motif of a U.S. patriotic eagle and shield with 'AMERICAN STANDARD' underneath, one printed in red and three in black. All lenses spherocylindrical with powers in minus cyls and transposed into plus cyls in pencil on the 'American Standard' lenses, which are likely to have been made in the U.S. Also see Cat. # 4322
Historical Significance: The Australian Optical Co. started as an importer of American-made lenses and later began manufacturing lens blanks in Australia, Th e company was delisted in 1956.
