Description Of Item: Ten flat glass lenses in two sets of packets. One set of 7 with rounded, roughly edged lenses, 42 mm x 42 mm, with 'A.C. & Co' printed and power stamped, also either A, B or C, hand written in red ink. These markings are the same as on the hand ground lenses of Herman Renk (see Cat. # 4298) indicating they were made before 1920.The second set of three lenses has a motif stamp a large 'C' in decorative script with 'A' , & Co'. and 'Ltd.' contained within, indicating a desire by Arthur Cocks & Co to promote the business. One lens is spherical, 46 mm dia, and other two are square, 42 mm x 42 mm.
Historical Significance: Arthur Cocks and Co was a well known optical wholesaler and manufacturer in Australia in the 20th C. It was founded in 1899 in Sydney by Sir Arthur Cocks (1862-1943), a prominent NSW politician and mayor of Sydney in 1913. He was active in the early formation of an optometry organization in NSW in 1904. The company ceased trading in the 1980s.
