It was popular book that ran to a number of ediitons. Edgar Browne FRCS Edin MCh Liverpool Hon causa (1841 - 1917) began the study of medicine at St. Thomas's Hospital, took the diplomas of M.R.C.S. and L.M. in 1864,of L.S.A. in 1865, and shortly afterwards settled in general practice in Liverpool. He was a demonstrator of anatomy with Dr. T. R. Glynn at the School of Medicine in Liverpool, and wasappointed surgeon to St. George's Hospital for Skin Diseases and assistant surgeon to the Eye and Ear Infirmary in Liverpool. He later specialised in diseases of the eye and became consulting surgeon at the Eye and Ear Infirmary and was lecturer in ophthalmology in Liverpool University.
