Description Of Item: Original back and silver box (384 mm x 160 mm 110 mm) containing stereoscope slide viewer, box of stereoscope slides and instruction manual. Stereoscope in /wood with brown crackle metal eye shield. Scale and MODEL 40 EYE COMFORT STEREOSCOPE in blank print along support bar. Detachable sliding slide holder. Silver and black box of 12 black cardboard stereo cards with sepia-coloured pairs of photographs of various scenes, 178 mm x 88 mm. Sticker marked 1844 ETA UNIT on side. AN with various numbers printed in silver on top right hand corner of cards. 'Patent applied for' on first 5 cards and Patent No. 2,387,422' on last 7. Instruction manual red paper covers, 24 pages , copyright 1944. 'Brian H. Colman' hand-written across top left corner in black ink.See also Cat. #s 4366, 4668
Historical Significance: .The Keystone View Company was a major distributor of stereoscopic images from 1892 to 1963. By 1905 it was the world's largest stereographic company. It was started by B.L. Singley, a salesman for Underwood and Underwood, a photograph company founded by two brothers in Kansas which moved to New York City in 1891.
