Whittenbury's Trial Lens Set Category: Equipment Sub-Category: Trial lens case Time Period: 1940 to 1999 Description Of Item: 415mm x 335mm x 70mm,Black trial lens case with 'SX 10778 / LIET. / D.A. WHITTENBURY.' painted in white on lid top. Leather handle & two latches on either side on front. 'TRADE MARK' and diamond symbol with a double B (one mirrored, both letters sharing stems) and a double-ended arrow through it on both latches. Case interior lined with blue velvet, and a wooden base housing trial lenses inside. Lock strike plate inscribed 'ENGLISH / LEVER', 'UBIQUE' (within shield), and 'TRADE MARK' around either side of a base-down equilateral triangle with upside down 'T' inside. The latter two symbols also found on the hinge plates. Half-aperture trial lenses with black crinkle finish inside, -1.50DC, -2.50DC, +4.50DC, -1.75DS missing. 0.5 & 1.0 prism dioptre lenses replaced with silver rim full aperture lenses. Historical Significance: Assumed to have been used in service by South Australian Lieut D.A. Whittenbury. How Acquired: Donated by C.
