Optometrical Auxiliary Year Of Publication/Manufacture: 1981 Time Period: 1940 to 1999 Place Of Publication/Manufacture: Australia Publisher/Manufacturer: Stuart Description Of Item: Silver-plated spoon 112 mm x 25 mm with shell shaped bowl, shaft decorated with pattern of alternating rectangles and circles and an enamelled circular insert at the head of the shaft with gold lettering 'NSW OPTOMETRICAL AUXILIARY' with a black background around the edge of the insert and '10TH YEAR 1971-1981' with a red background filling the remainder of the insert. The back of the shaft is embossed 'MADE IN AUSTRALIA' and 'Stuart/SILVERPLATED at the head. Historical Significance: The NSW Optometrical Auxiliary was a group that worked to promote optometry and eye care in NSW between 1971 and 1987, a period in which optometrists were not permitted to advertise and the opportunity to promote the profession and eye care was limited. The group comprised wives of optometrists almost exclusively. The auxiliary was particularly active in schools, teaching children about eye care using material developed by the American Optometric Association. Similar groups existed in Victoria and Queensland.
