Historical Significance: Peter Abel was a pioneer German optometrist, his son Hans Peter practised in Germany and Australia and was a Fellow of the ACO.Peter was instrumental in the manufacture of scleral contact lenses in Germany after the war and had one of the first manufacturing plants for scleral lenses in Germany. He was a co-founder of the German Contact Lens Association (VDC), co-founder of the German Society for Optometry (DGO), co-founder of the Scientific Association of Optometrists (in Germany), he was the first vice-president of the International Optical & Optometric League (founded in London 1947). He was a long time lecturer at the German School for Optometry in Berlin. The Association of German Contact Lens Specialist and Optometrists (VDCO) is the successor of the VDC and offer an annual 'Peter Abel Prize' for PhD candidates researching in the fields of Optometry, contact lens optics and physiology of the eye.
