The 'grandfather' of the journal was the Optical News, produced by the New South Wales Institute of Ophthalmic Opticians commencing in 1911. The Optical News was followed by the Optometrist of New South Wales, and in 1918 it was decided to make this publication the official organ of the newly formed Australian Optometrical Association and Volume 1 of the current series of publications was published in 1919 and its name was changed to the Commonwealth Optometrist. (see Cat No 1513 and see also Cat No 1069 for volumes published in 1923 and 1924). In 1929, the name was changed to the Australasian Journal of Optometry to include New Zealand. Belatedly in 1959, realisation that New Zealand had its own journal prompted a further change in title to the Australian Journal of Optometry. In January 1985, the name of the Journal was changed to Clinical and Experimental Optometry.
