Historical Significance: This book provides another useful picture of the level of knowledge in the ophthalmic sciences at the beginning of the 20th century. Knowles held an MD degree and is author of other books including ' Eye defects: how to detect and correct them' (see cat. numbers 108, 3225) , "Practical optics" and the "The science and art of refraction". These book were published by an optical manufacturing company as promotion and to educate its clientele of opticians, optometrists and ophthamic medical practitioners.
