Description Of Item: DMV Soft Lens Handler (SLH) in original plastic cylinder with instruction sheet for lens insertion and removal. The device is made of lilac rubbery plastic. The small end has a shallow cupped indentation to support the lens for placement onto the eye. To remove the lens the pair of gripper pads at the opposite end are pressed firmly to the lens surface and gently squeezed together. Folded instruction sheet carries a copyright date of 1988. Instrument: 43 x 15 x 8 mm. Case: 47mm long x 21 mm diameter. Instruction sheet: 177 x 82 mm.
Historical Significance: DMV Corporation was founded by the late Dr. Dennis England who was a pioneer in the contact lens field as the first to apply for a corneal lens patent in 1946. Even though his patent was denied, his entrepreneurial spirit persisted and he began making contact lens removers in 1968.Later the company expanded its base to include soft lens removers as well as tools for handling lenses in the laboratory.
