Description Of Item: Industrial light meter titled 'WESTON FOOT-CANDLE METER MODEL 614'. Solid bakelite hinged case, leather carry strap. 3 ranges of light level on needle dial. 4-way selector switch. Instructions for use and recommended workplace levels given inside lid. Photosensitive cell hinges up, impressed beneath 'WESTON *PHOTRONIC CELL MODEL 856 TYPE 5, COLOR CODE .. *TRADEMARK'. Dial display includes serial No 3301. Faint imprint on base '2 1964'. Case closed: 175mm W x 86mm D x 48mm H.
Historical Significance: This light meter was probably used by the Industrial Division of Coles & Garrard to assess workplace lighting levels. Edward Weston founded his company in 1888 and started manufacturing general instrumentation in Newark, New Jersey. A British factory was opened in Enfield a year later. The Weston Light Meter Model 614 was produced continuously from the early 1930s through to 1950s. Ref: www.westonmeters.info.
