Catalogue Number: 3924 Contact Lens Manufacturing Tools Category: Equipment Sub-Category: Contact lens equipment Time Period: 1940 to 1999 Description Of Item: Five tools used in the manufacture of contact lenses made of stainless steel, brass and aluminium. (1) Total dimensions 38 mm diameter x 25 mm high consists of a central annular piece with two knurled securing screws, two angled spring loaded brass slides which impinge on the central void of the tool and a top threaded portion which accepts a tapered threaded ring which engages with the slides to alter their position. A brass plate with a conical central section engraved with marks of 10 degree separation can be located on the top of the tool. (2) Total dimensions 25 mm diameter x 22 mm high consists of a brass base with a central threaded hole and a stainless steel threaded upper portion with two vertical slots opposite each other. Stainless steel jaws controlled by an outer ring slide along the slots. Four holes at 90 degree spacing allow insertion of a handle (5) to rotate the ring. (3) A brass cylinder with a tapered domed upper section, a wider waist and lower straight sided section. A tapered hole 23 mm deep is in the base of the tool. Total dimensions 18 mm diameter x 25 mm high. (4) A brass cylinder 26 mm diam x 10 mm high with 12 mm diameter central recess and smaller threaded hole and has two steel locating pins either side of the recess. (5) Rectangular aluminium plate 130 mm x 26 mm x 6 mm with a 12 mm radius cut-out on one end and a steel pin 4 mm from the end of the cut-out. The pin engages with the holes in the outer ring of (2).
