Description Of Item: Mounted black and white photograph in an oval mount. Mount 165 mm. x 215 mm. Oval image 142 mm. x 90 mm. Pasted on the back of the mount is a piece of paper on which is written, 'R.C. Brier (about 1915) Note the astig. clip - This was worn by him for shaving until he died in 1960'.
Historical Significance: Royston Carr Brier (1884 - 1960) Royston Brier was chief optician and director of Flavelle Brothers, the first firm of opticians in Brisbane. He was active in professional bodies, being a foundation member of the Institute of Ophthalmic Opticians of Queensland Inc in 1908, honorary secretary from 1908 to 1912, and had two terms as president in 1919 and 1928. He was closely associated with the establishment of a national professional body in 1918. (See Comm Optom March 1927, p 414-423 and Vincent, Stephen J. and Mountford, John A., 'Hamlyn R. Brier (1911 - 2001): Queensland's optometrist for all seasons', Clinical and Experimental Optometry, vol. 100, 2017, pp. 541-4). Brier was heavily involved with efforts to secure the Opticians Act (1917) for Queensland.He is the father of Hamlyn Brier, also prominent in his profession and who was the Queensland State President of the Queensland association from 1947 to 1949.According to the label on the rear of the mount the photograph was taken around 1915.
