Historical Significance: The need for continuing education and for members of the profession to gather together regularly was not fully appreciated until the mid 1970s. Early CPE was confined to monthly lectures organised by the State association and attendance by small groups of activist optometrists at an optometry section of the Australia and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science commencing in 1926. There were sometimes education sessions organised in conjunction with the annual conferences of the State and national associations. The Australian College of Optometry started its systematically planned and diverse year-long CPE programs in 1975. The Australian Optometrical Association organised national congresses but not every year. The program for this congress in Bali and Singapore was the 3rd such congress. It was held in conduction with the 2nd Asian Pacific Optometric Congress. This material illustrates the awakening of the profession of the need for regular educational meetings. The material is also evidence of Australia reaching out to optometrists in the Asia-Pacific.
