Description Of Item: Boxwood Axis-Finder with brass swinging arm. Printed in black ink: 'MADDOX CYLINDER AXIS-FINDER' and axis scale from 0 to 180. Upper margin printed with linear scale of centimetres 1-9. Blank on reverse. Upper edge is grooved to hold the spectacles or lens which are to be assessed. The spectacles are held in the grooved section and then the device is tilted to the right or left until the deviation of a distant vertical line, viewed through the lens, disappears. The brass pointer then indicates the axis of the cylinder of the lens.
