Historical Significance: The College of Optometrists, as it is now known, was founded as the British College of Ophthalmic Opticians (Optometrists) in 1980 through an agreement with the British Optical Association, the Scottish Association of Opticians and the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers. Those associations gave up their role as examining bodies for qualification for the practise of optometry in favour of the College being the sole such body. The British Optical Association wound-up after 85 years of operation. The College took a new name of The British College of Optometrists in 1987 and became The College of Optometrists in 1995.The Foundation members of the College were those who were Fellows of one or more of the three agreeing associations. Mr Frederick James Price became a Fellow of the Worshipful Company of Spectacle Makers in 1948. See Cat No. 3612.
