Historical Significance: This ophthalmoscope could be mounted on a wooden stand or held in the hand. It used ambient lighting, either daylight or a well-lit room. An example was shown at the South Kensington Museum Exhibition of Scientific Apparatus in 1876 which formed the basis for the Science Museum, London.
