Description Of Item: Ten rectangular clear plastic containers 58 mm x 27 mm x 12 mm with moulded contact lens well with white screw top. Each container is labelled' Snoflex' and 'Gas permeable' in orange. Lens parameters are typewritten on a separate rectangular label and have one lens diameter: 9.5 mm and base curves of 7.20 to 8.10 mm in 0.10 mm steps. All lenses are marked -1.00. Stored in Cat. No 3440.
Historical Significance: Smith & Nephew was a pharmaceutical company in UK formed in 1856 by Thomas Smith. Smith & Nephew Associated Companies (SANAC) was formed in 1957 and was involved in rigid contact lens manufacture and solution distribution in UK. S&N purchased Obrig UK in 1970 in preparation for entry into the soft contact lens market. In 1971 in a joint venture with Hydron, Hydron made the lens buttons and S&N lathe cut the lenses. In 1974 S&N and Hydron split with S&N continuing to produce lathe cut lenses. See also Cat. Nos. 2619, 2629.
