Historical Significance: The linear plus bifocal contact lens was a rigid contact lens based on the design of the executive bifocal spectacle lens with the upper section being the distance correction and the lower section the near correction. The lens was designed to translate upwards on down gaze to locate the reading section on the visual axis. A truncation on the bottom of the lens maintained the lens in the correct orientation on the cornea and assisted translation.
